Today the calendar tells me it’s World Kindness Day. Cute. Sweet. Easy to hashtag. We slap be kind on our hoodies and our bumper stickers and call it good.
But kindness isn’t a slogan. It’s a practice. A discipline. A daily choosing.
And here’s the kicker no one wants to admit:
If you can’t offer kindness to yourself, you’re going to struggle to offer it cleanly to anyone else.
I’ve fought more battles with myself than with the world. Maybe you know that kind of war—the one waged in the mirror, in the quiet, in the relentless tallying of “not enough.” My productivity, my writing pace, my fitness, my house, my body… I am quick to reprimand myself for underperforming. Rest feels like weakness. Pausing feels like quitting.
But here’s the truth I keep relearning, over and over:
The harsher I am with myself, the worse I feel and the worse I show up in my own life.
So, on this World Kindness Day, I’m starting with the only person I’ll be stuck with forever: me. And I’m inviting you to do the same.
Offer yourself one kind sentence today.
One tiny encouragement.
One moment of grace you didn’t think you’d earned.
Let yourself enjoy the small sweetness’s: rain tapping your skin, your fake fireplace crackling like it has secrets, the coffee that pulls you out of bed. Let yourself notice your body—this animal, this vessel, this stubborn miracle that has carried you through every story you’ve survived. It may not look how you want it to, but it’s never once abandoned you.
Admire your endurance. Admire your resilience. Admire the way you’re still here.
Because once we begin treating ourselves like someone worth loving, that goodness can’t help but spill outward.
And the world—your world, my world—could use the overflow.
Be kind to you. Then let it ripple.
